The
Ocean Foundation’s Mission is to Support, strengthen,
and promote those organizations dedicated to reversing
the trend of destruction of ocean environments around
the world.
The Foundation
operates around the world in Anguilla, Australia, Belize,
Canada, Costa Rica, China, Guatemala, Israel, Malaysia,
Mexico, Russia, St. Kitts, Tanzania, Thailand, United
States, among others.
Selected projects
include:
Australia- Our
organization provided support to The Australian Institute
of Marine Sciences’ in the creation of their Coral
Geographic project. The project consisted on the creation
of an advanced website designed to integrate all biogeographic
knowledge of coral into one user-friendly site.
Belize- The Ocean Foundation assisted The Toledo Institute
for Development and Environment in the improvement of
their surveillance efforts to safeguard the Port Honduras
Marine Reserve. The Port Honduras Marine Reserve is
a 160m² protected area critical to the biodiversity
of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
Caribbean- In agreement with the Caribbean Conservation
Corporation’s mission, to protect sea turtles
and their habitats within the Wider Caribbean and Atlantic,
the Ocean Foundation has provided support for their
ongoing sea turtle research and conservation activities.
Guatemala- The Ocean Foundation was pleased to support
the development of The Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund);
an environmental fund whose primary goal is to protect
the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion shared by Belize, Guatemala,
Honduras and Mexico. Our organization also provided
the MAR Fund with the necessary funds for the start-up
process of their Community Marine Reserves Program.
The program was created to diagnose the community fishermen’s
groups in the region and their potential and needs for
the establishment of community marine reserves.
Thailand- Our organization was happy to provide the
New England Aquarium with travel and research support
for their Tsunami Coral Reef Damage Assessment Expedition.
This expedition was launched to do an assessment on
reef damage after the December 26, 2004 Sumatran tsunami
in the Indian Ocean. A summarized article of the expedition
results appeared in the December 2005 National Geographic
issue, Rapid Assessment Survey of Tsunami-affected Reef
of Thailand, and received world-wide media coverage.
United States- The Ocean Foundation’s work in
the US has focused on education, coral reef conservation,
scientific research, bluefin tuna conservation, support
for various marine scientific and management meetings,
public awareness campaigns, documentary productions,
sea turtle conservation.
