Guatemala- The Ocean Foundation was pleased to support the development of The Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund); an environmental fund whose primary goal is to protect the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion shared by Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Our organization also provided the MAR Fund with the necessary funds for the start-up process of their Community Marine Reserves Program. The program was created to diagnose the community fishermen’s groups in the region and their potential and needs for the establishment of community marine reserves.

This expedition was launched to do an assessment on reef damage after the December 26, 2004 Sumatran tsunami in the Indian Ocean. A summarized article of the expedition results appeared in the December 2005 National Geographic issue, Rapid Assessment Survey of Tsunami-affected Reef of Thailand, and received world-wide media coverage.
