Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project
(www.kiliporters.org)
Those who have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro know that the porters are the heart and soul of your trek. Without their hard work and strength we would not be able to fully experience the magnificence of Kili. But the truth is porters are often impoverished Tanzanians who depend on this labor-intensive employment in order to feed themselves and their families.
Porters can be severely underpaid and many climb Kilimanjaro without adequate clothing, footwear, or equipment. Like climbers, porters can suffer from altitude sickness and hypothermia. In fact, in September 2002 three porters died of hypothermia when a late season storm hit Mount Kilimanjaro.
The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project recognizes the value of the demanding labor these porters perform. We are committed to improving the working conditions of the Porters on Kilimanjaro. Whether you are a climber, porter, guide, or managing a tour company, the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project needs your help in ensuring fair treatment of all porters.
Support for International Change (SIC)
Support for International Change is a non-governmental organization founded with two main goals: to limit the impact of HIV/AIDS in underserved communities, and to train future leaders in international health and development
SIC has been working in Tanzania since 2002 and we now provide a comprehensive range of free services to our target communities including awareness campaigns, mobile HIV testing and counseling, and training and support for Community Health Workers.
Our volunteer programs provide structured service-learning opportunities for students at selected American and British universities. SIC also runs a unique program for Tanzanian youth called Tupambane.
Save
the Elephants
Wildlife Conservation Network
(www.savetheelephants.com)
The
mission of Save the Elephants is to secure a future
for elephants and to sustain the beauty and ecological
integrity of the places where they live; to promote
man’s delight in their intelligence and the diversity
of their world, and to develop a tolerant relationship
between the two species.
The charity was
founded in 1993 by Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, President
& Chief Executive Officer, STE, who made a pioneering
study of elephant behaviour in the late '60s in Lake
Manyara National Park, Tanzania, and has worked on elephant
status Africa-wide since. Explorers, conservationists
and elephant scientists serve as fellow trustees or
advisors to the board.
