China: Tracking Wild PandaBook now!

Cost upon request
Beneficiary: Conservation International

Even a 3-year-old child can point to this picture and say, “Pandas!”—but few people understand their behavior in the wild. Take part in an exclusive journey to explore the core conservation areas in western China where the bulk of the world’s remaining 1,600 wild pandas live.

This journey will be centered around Sichuan’s Wanglang Nature Reserve. Travelers will hike through bamboo and rhododendron forests, accompanied by Reserve staff, to track panda routes and help monitor infrared cameras that record evidence of their presence and behavior. Along the way, you’ll learn about other rare wildlife, too, such as golden monkeys, red pandas, takins and birds, and have the chance to get up close to pandas by visiting a base that protects, breeds and studies them in an enclosed environment. This trip also allows explorations of Sichuan’s amazing natural scenery, including the colorful foliage and ponds at the popular Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve.

You’ll begin in the vibrant capital of Chengdu, where you get to see pandas at a breeding and research center. You’ll then head north to Wanglang Nature Reserve, stopping along the way to meet ethnic villagers. At Wanglang, you’ll spend your days hiking and tracking panda routes with rangers, learning to identify their presence through bamboo bites and other traces. You’ll then head to Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve, taking in its vividly colored lakes and stunning waterfalls before flying back to Chengdu to end the unforgettable journey.
