Elevate Haiti: Days 1-3 Day 1: Port-au-Prince
At this time you will have the opportunity to meet our non-profit partner and receive an overview of Haiti’s culture. You will spend the first night in Port-au-Prince and head to Jacmel first thing in the morning.
Day 2: Port-au-Prince to Jacmel After an overnight in Port-au-Prince you will travel to Jacmel by van. You will be welcomed to Jacmel by our non-profit staff and receive an orientation of the volunteer project you will be participating in.
Today you will begin your first day of volunteer work. After an intense first day, you will have the chance to spend the evening relaxing.
Day 3: Jacmel Today you will continue your work volunteering. You will be rewarded in the evening with a tour of downtown Jacmel and a chance to see the pretty seaside town as well as the aftermath of the quake.
Elevate Haiti: Jacmel Community School Day 13-15 Day 13: Jacmel The volunteer portion of your journey is done. You will spend the day out at Ti Mouillage, a beautiful local beach. Celebrate your accomplishment by enjoying the day gazing out at the Caribbean Sea, enjoying barbecue from local vendors and swimming in the clear blue waters.
Day 14: Jacmel to Port-au-Prince Today you leave Jacmel for Croix des Bouquets - a village outside of Port-au-Prince known for its artisanry, especially in metalwork. Artisans make pieces by hand from oil drums. Here you will have the chance to support Haiti’s local economy and bring home souvenirs for your family and friends. You will then continue to Port-au-Prince before your flight home.
Elevate Haiti: Jacmel Days 9-12 Days 9 - 12: Jacmel Volunteer work continues through the week. By day 12 you will be able to see the finished results of your labor! Each evening ends with downtime and activities with the kids that will benefit from your work.
Elevate Haiti: Jacmel Community School : Logistics Work: Construction is extremely physically demanding work. In addition to the physical demands of the work, on the ground conditions are extremely hot: work takes place under the burning Haitian sun. We ask that you realistically assess your physical strength, abilities and endurance before planning a trip to help with the construction work. Accommodation: Two versions of this service trip are available: The basic package includes just essential amenities. You will stay in tents or on pads on the floor. Electricity is spotty and there is no running water. Bathing is done via bucket baths. Volunteers must provide their own sheets and towels. This package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are grocery stores in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel where you can purchase food and drinks. Clean drinking water will be provided to all volunteers. Access to water and electricity is limited. It is important to remember that this is a solidarity experience and even though the living conditions may be different than you are used to, you will be in safe places and you will be at "home". An upgraded version of the trip is also available. This package includes all meals, and accommodations at nearby hotels. Transportation to and from the hotel and site is included. Hotels: Palm Inn, Port-au-Prince: Hotel de L’Amitie, Jacmel: Food: Volunteers will be provided with three meals a day — a simple breakfast of bread, peanut butter, fruit and coffee; and lunch and dinner meals of rice and beans with a sauce. Any other food meals will be the responsibility of the volunteer. There are grocery stores in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel where volunteers can purchase food and drinks. Clean drinking water will be provided to all volunteers. A van will be provided to transport the group to and from all scheduled activities. Precautions: Because of the working and living conditions, all volunteers are required to have an updated tetanus vaccine. All volunteers must purchase medical travel insurance, including emergency medical evacuation coverage. We recommend that all volunteers take prophylactic malaria medication. Every volunteer or group of volunteers should also travel with their own first aid kit. Up-to-date hepatitis and typhoid vaccines are recommended. Pack all prescription medications in your carry-on. Elevate Haiti: Days 4-8 Days 4-7: Jacmel Each day you will volunteer and begin to see the your work take shape! Each evening you will have downtime to relax, play with the kids and enjoy being in Haiti.
Day 8: Jacmel Today you will have the day off from your challenging volunteer work. You will be transported in the morning out to Bassin-Bleu, a series of natural waterfalls and basins in the hills above Jacmel. Known as one of Haiti’s natural wonders, Bassin-Bleu is a must-see.
