Over 3000 kilometres from north to south, the Pacific coast of Peru is earning increasing fame as a privileged surf destination. Here surfers will find long left point breaks, sandy beach breaks, uncrowded waves, great seafood, and of course Chicama -- famous for being the longest wave in the world. Very consistent waves and a remarkable geography make this country an equally fun destination for surfers of all ages, tastes, and experience.
Along with being an amazingly rich country in terms of culture, history, and biodiversity, Peru is also a land where poverty and a lack of respect for nature and local cultures are important issues.
The WAVES association was created with the purpose of improving local people’s life conditions through education. This is an initiative where volunteers and donors from all over the world find the chance to contribute in a specific way to development of Peruvian coast towns -- most of them small fishing communities located very close or even right over great surfing points, such as Lobitos Beach.
This seven-day Surf and Serve program allows travellers to enjoy a surf vacation in an authentic and non-touristy area, while contributing to the support of an education program.
Volunteers contribute financially through a donation and have the chance to assist teachers in the daily activities (English, swimming, surfing, and environmental and recycling lessons), as well having as the chance to interact with locals in a culturally-enriching experience for both.

The WAVES project is primarily focused on education as a key factor to provide local children with the tools to improve their life conditions. WAVES is committed to providing instruction on specific subjects on a daily basis. At the moment, the most important subjects are: English, surfing and swimming, environmental instruction, and a workshop on surfboard repair.
During this week, volunteers will be able to participate as assistants in all of the classes that they are interested in. Classes usually take place from 8am to 11am, and then from 3pm to 5:30pm. During this time you’ll interact with local children, share your experiences with them, help them with homework, and also play and enjoy your time together. Many volunteers are gifted with particular skills such as arts, music, photography and others; this week is the perfect time to share and teach your skills, and motivate kids towards new horizons for their lives.
Engagement and participation in the different activities is completely up to the volunteers. Considering that you are on vacation, you’ll be encouraged to spend some time of the day having fun -- surfing, reading, exploring the area, or just enjoying the beach.
Beyond surfing, there are other interesting activities to enjoy, such as a two-hour sea trip with local fishermen. There is also a beautiful walking route on the beach, ending with a visit to impressive rock formations and caves.
Meals: Enjoy breakfast in the WAVES house or at your hotel. Lunch will be shared at a local family house together with the other volunteers, and everyone will cook dinner together at the WAVES house. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to have fun and share their experiences at the end of the day.
