About Pine Cay
Pine Cay is one of the smaller Caicos Islands, lying at the Northern portion of the chain. It is approximately 800 acres in size—a little over 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. Geologically, the island is a series of low rolling limestone ridges formed from solidified beach dunes. The vast majority of the island is dedicated open space that will remain undeveloped.
Water
Pine Cay’s most distinctive feature, aside from its extraordinary two-mile long beach, is an underground fresh water lens. The structure and porosity of the limestone is such that rainfall is absorbed and held as if by a sponge. Being lighter, the fresh water floats on the underlying salt water, varying in depth from a few inches to over 40 feet. A hydrological survey has determined that there is ample fresh water to support the amount of residential development on the island. However water is a precious resource and island inhabitants practice conservation in order to ensure its continued volume and purity. There are 7 fresh water ponds on Pine Cay. The Meridian Club also practices rainwater catchment. There is a sistern under the dining room floor!
Climate
Pine Cay is blessed with a comfortable year round climate. Mid-day temperatures range from the low 80’s in winter to just over 90 degrees in late summer.
Flora and fauna
Pine Cay has several distinctive vegetation zones, each with its own group of plants and attendant bird life. Over a hundred plant varieties have been identified, including an ancient mahogany tree, branched cacti and 2 varieties of native orchid. The bird population varies with the season, increasing during migration periods.
Marine life
The waters surrounding Pine Cay contain a remarkable variety of marine life. Offshore, only a short boat ride away, are miles of undisturbed barrier reef verging on deep drop-offs. An amazing number of fish, corals, sponges and fans are found in water 6-15 feet deep. Visibility can exceed 100 feet. Water temperatures average a pleasant 75-80 degrees.
Pine Cay Project:
Established by Pine Cay’s homeowners, the Pine Cay Project supports local environmental and educational initiatives throughout the Turks and Caicos. Since 2002 the Project has donated $450,000 in TCI educational grants.
Most recently, in October and November 2008, Pine Cay Project awarded approximately $90,000 in grants for hurricane-related recovery efforts and educational improvements in local schools, following a double hurricane blow, which affected much of the islands’ infrastructure.
Sustainability Guidelines
The Meridian Club has supported environmental conservation as a matter of conscience long before it was fashionable to do so, through the following practices:
- Strict building guidelines, including set-backs from the beach
- Separated recycling program
- Rainwater catchment and storage systems
- Use of solar hot water heaters
- Compact fluorescent bulbs throughout the Club
- Use of reusable shopping bags and water containers
- Bicyle and golfcart use. No cars.
- Boats equipped with four stoke, fuel-efficient engines.
- Local community/philanthropic investment.
While staying on Pine Cay, please conserve water. In spite of the island’s rainfall, it is still a valued commodity. Respect the island’s land and marine ecosystem. It is fragile and requires care. Staying on Pine Cay is a chance to experience a rare and satisfying simplicity. Use your experience on the island to reevaluate how much you really need at home!
